10% Drop in Dutch Pig Farms

20 November 2009
Almost 700 pig farms have shut in the Netherlands in the course of one year, bringing the total number to 7,568 according to figures from the Dutch central statistics bureau. This continues a trend which has been visible for a long time – 450 farms closed a year previously. The decrease is attributable to difficulties in the farming sector and also to increasing specialisation in the Dutch market – the Netherlands is increasingly becoming a piglet producer for finisher sites abroad.
