Amphibians and Reptiles under Threat

25 May 2009
One fifth of all reptiles and almost a quarter of all amphibians that inhabit Europe are under threat, says a study published by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The greatest threat to both reptiles and amphibians in Europe is loss of habitat. Six reptile species are considered to be critically endangered, which means that they are threatened with extinction. Eleven more reptile species are classified as endangered, which means that they face a very high risk of extinction. Among amphibians, two species are considered critically endangered and another five endangered. Around 151 reptile species and 85 species of amphibians currently live in Europe.
