Ancient Gene to Fight Rust in Wheat?

A team of Swiss researchers have discovered two genes which they say could protect wheat against rust. Millions of hectares of crops are lost every year due to leaf rust, stripe rust and powdery mildew. Lr34 and Yr36 genes would offer long term protection against these diseases. According to the researchers, this gene had been lost with the domestication of wheat and has now been recovered by the scientists.
