Baltic Cruise Ship Pollution

17 July 2009
Sewage from cruise ships is being dumped in the Baltic Sea because port facilities for the disposal of waste are inadequate, warns the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). It claims that only three of more than 20 cruise ship ports around the sea have adequate facilities, even though the region relies heavily on tourism. WWF is working within the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to push for stronger regulations, which currently allow ships to discharge waste in international waters. The organisation would like to see a voluntary ban on waste water discharge. The Baltic Sea cruise ship industry is growing at an estimated 13% a year.
