Belgium Investigates Energy Drink

18 June 2009
Food safety authorities in Belgium have launched an inquiry after traces of cocaine in an energy drink were found in Germany. Belgium’s Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) says that although the small quantities of cocaine found would not pose a danger to public health, the presence of cocaine violates the law. The energy drink contains a decocainised coca leaf extract, which the manufacturer claims is used as flavouring in foodstuffs around the world and is considered safe. At least six Germany states have now banned the drink. Results of the Belgian investigation are expected next week.
