Better Monitoring of Antimicrobials

European food safety bodies have called for surveillance activities to be strengthened in order to combat the spread of resistance to antimicrobials. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the European Food Safety Authority, the European Medicines Agency and the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks have published an opinion on antimicrobial resistance that focuses on infections transmitted to humans from animals and food. They say that research is needed to control infectious diseases in animals, such as vaccination programmes.
