Biofuel Potential from Algae

09 April 2009
A project to develop biofuels from various forms of algae was launched this month. The €6m Biomara initiative, co-funded by the EU, will focus on the potential of marine algae to produce biofuels that can be used in remote rural areas. Marine algae have a simple structure that can convert easily to fuel. Biomara will look into the feasibility of using both microscopic organisms and seaweeds. The project also hopes to boost the marine renewable energy sector.
