Bulgaria Meat Sector to Return Aid
11 September 2009
About a dozen Bulgarian meat processing companies have been receiving money from the EU Sapard Programme fraudulently and will therefore have to pay back the subsidies they have received. The State Fund’s Agriculture chief made this revelation to the Bulgarian parliament, though she refused to reveal which companies were involved and the sums they will have to pay back. The investigation into subsidy payments had been requested by the European anti-fraud office (OLAF) due to irregularities.
