Bulgaria to Close Landfill Sites

Over 200 Bulgarian landfill sites are due to close by 16 July because they do not comply with waste legislation. As a consequence, 120 municipalities will be left without waste disposal facilities until the construction of new sites are completed. This situation has caused turmoil in some municipalities, which, in the meantime, will have to transport their waste to other municipalities where disposal systems are in order. Some municipalities are worried about additional transport and storage costs. The Bulgarian government wants to put in place subsidies and interest-free loans to help struggling municipalities.
