Call to Overhaul Shipping Safety Rules

25 March 2009
Safety regulations to protect foreign workers who often live and sleep on the boats where they work must be reviewed after 3 people died in a fire on board a Scottish fishing vessel, says the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). An MAIB report into the tragedy blamed poor ship construction and a lack of safety training and official inspections for causing the deaths. Regulations and design requirements to ensure the safety of fishing vessels at sea do not take into account foreign fishing crews, who often sleep on board the vessels on which they work, the report said. Around 200 foreign workers make their living on Scottish vessels, says the MAIB.
