Carbon Capture Power Plant to Start

10 April 2009
The world’s first carbon capture and storage (CCS) power plant will start operating this month in Lacq, South France. Energy company Total has upgraded the existing power plant with CCS technology to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%. The €60 million project, which will run for 2 years, is the first to link together all parts of the carbon capture chain, from burning natural gas to isolating CO2 emissions. The EU wants to operate 12 demonstration plants in the next 10 years and has reserved 300 million carbon credits from the Emissions Trading Scheme to fund this technology.
