Chernobyl Still Affecting Farms

13 May 2009
Nearly 370 UK farms are still affected by radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power station accident in 1986. In some regions, land use is still restricted, and some 190,000 sheep are still subject to restrictions because of excessive levels of radiocaesium in their meat. The regions most affected by radiation are Wales, Northern England and Scotland. Restrictions in 1986 affected 9,700 farms and 4,225,000 sheep. Some environmentalists claim that these figures should force a rethink over the UK government’s plan to build 11 new nuclear reactors in England and Wales.
