Children and Pesticides Study

03 July 2009
The effect of pesticides on children’s health could be more significant than previously thought, according to a new study on pesticide exposure. Until now it was assumed that after the age of 2, children and adults had the same level of PON1 enzymes needed to detoxify certain pesticides. This new study however shows that a significant number of children don’t develop these enzymes until the age of 7. PON1 enzymes are critical for detoxifying the body from organophosphate pesticides, which attack irreversibly the nervous system of insects but also humans exposed to large amounts. Children are 3 to 5 times more vulnerable to the negative effects of pesticides than adults.
