The Netherlands must develop a long-term climate adaptation policy, says Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency PBL. The newly released PBL report points to the need for a spatial planning strategy to increase the country’s ability to cope with climate change. This strategy should focus on flood protection, freshwater supplies, transport and energy networks protection from extreme weather conditions, along with new health threats related to climate change. The report also proposes the creation of new freshwater bodies in urban areas, use of nature reserves and an improvement of early warning systems for extreme weather events.
