Climate: Butterfly Habitats Shifting

17 March 2009
Warmer temperatures during the last decade have had a strong influence on butterfly ranges in Finland, says a European study. The survey, conducted under the EU-funded project ALARM, focused on butterflies due to their sensitivity to environmental change. The study analysed shifts in the northern boundaries of ranges of 48 butterfly species in Finland. Scientists claim that the results reveal the largest recorded distributional shift of any insect worldwide, and that the northward shift in ranges underlines that temperatures in Finland are rising.
