Climate Change Protests in Italy

13 July 2009
Environment activists from around the world occupied four coal-fired power stations across Italy to draw attention to climate change. The protest coincided with the G8 meeting in L’Aquila. Six activists occupied the coal conveyor of Brindisi, the biggest coal fired power plant in Italy, which emits more than 14 million tonnes of CO2 a year. A further 15 protestors climbed the chimney at the Fusina plant near Venice to hang a banner demanding action. The Italian Government is planning to convert a number of old oil-fired power plants into clean coal plants, but some campaigners are sceptical as to the benefits of this relatively new technology.
