Climate Change in the Mediterranean

06 April 2009
Climate change will make the Mediterranean region even drier by 2100 and result in significant environmental changes, says a new study. The research, which was carried out as part of the EU funded CIRCE2 project, says that soil moisture and water flow from rivers into the Mediterranean Sea will decrease, resulting in freshwater losses and further salinity of the sea. Agriculture may also suffer as a result of the freshwater deficit. The drier conditions will be caused by change in rainfalls and evaporation rates over land and sea.
