Cloned Animals in the Food Chain

Not everyone is happy with the European Commission’s decision to delay for a few months discussions on whether to allow meat and milk products from cloned animals into the food chain. Animal welfare groups such as Eurogroup for Animals have even gone so far as to challenge the legality of the delay. The Commission insists however that it needs more in-depth scientific advice from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and assistance has also been sought from authorities in Canada, Japan and the United States. "We want to be sure we do not create problems so that is why we are having discussions with our trading partners," said a Commission official.
