Finland has experienced a 33% increase in construction deaths over the past year, leading health and safety officials to suggest that new checks of workplaces will be needed. The fatalities included deaths after falls, unshored excavation collapses and the death of a diver at a dam construction site. According to the Director General of the Confederation of Finnish Construction Industries, the country is performing poorly in comparison with other European countries and is ‘competing for last place with Albania’.
