Curry Recall Due to Methyl Yellow

14 April 2009
Belgian food safety authority AFSCA/FAVV has discovered the banned colouring Methyl Yellow in a number of curry powders imported from India. As a consequence, recalls have been made across Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany. Although Methyl Yellow is a potential carcinogen and mutagen, AFSCA is advising consumers who may have eaten contaminated curry that they are not in danger. The case is similar to the discovery of the banned substance Sudan Red in curry powder a few years ago, which led to extensive product recalls.
