Cypriot Fruit Bats At Risk

15 May 2009
Fruit bats in Cyprus are in danger of extinction due to their age-old conflict with fruit farmers. The damage caused on farms by the bats has let to drastic action being taken to reduce their numbers. The fruit bat has however been protected in Cyprus since 2000, and the Cypriot government has put in place further measures to protect the species. These include distributing nets to protect fruit farms and trying to change people’s perceptions of the animal. In addition to being significant to the island’s biodiversity, fruit bats have a role in the natural regeneration of plants as they act as pollinators and seed dispersers.
