Czech Support for Car-Scrapping

09 June 2009
A wide ranging car-scrapping system will be adopted by the Czech Republic later this year. A Kc 30.000 premium will be given to consumers who buy a new car with a petrol or diesel engine (with a price limit of Kc 500.000) if in exchange the buyer scraps their car that is older than ten years. Consumers purchasing an environmentally-friendly car such as an electric or hybrid car or a car running on LPG will receive Kc 60.000. Buyers must submit an application to the State Environmental Fund. The initiative, which was announced by the Czech government as an anti-crisis measure, already exists in similar form in other European countries such as Austria, Germany, the UK and Slovakia. The long-term environmental and economic effects however have been questioned by some experts.
