Desert Solar Power for Europe

The Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) – a €300 billion project which aims to supply Europe with carbon free solar energy from North Africa – came one step closer to being realised with the establishment of a joint venture to begin work on the project. The 12 companies that founded the initiative signed the articles of association for the Desertec foundation last Friday and appointed a new CEO. The DII’s long term goal is to meet as much as 15% of Europe’s electricity demand by 2050 through the use of Concentrated Solar Power in the Sahara.
