Desertification Crossing the Med

03 July 2009
The Sahara desert is crossing the Mediterranean with around 74 million acres of fertile land along the coast drying up, according to Italian environmental protection group Legambiente. The main cause of drought is attributed to overexploitation of land and water resources. Farmers’ dependence on groundwater instead of rainfall can lead to excess use of underground deposits and can result in leakage of seawater into underground deposits, poisoning drinkable water. While the south of Italy and the Iberian Peninsula are at particular risk from this saltwater contamination, the French Riviera is also shows early signs of desertification.
