Dioxin Levels in Finnish Sea Trout

27 May 2009
Sea trout caught in Finnish rivers have the same levels of dioxins as salmon and Baltic herring in the Baltic Sea, says a new report. The Finnish Food Safety Authority (EVIRA) found that fish caught in 6 out of 7 Finnish rivers exceeded residue limits. The highest levels were measured in sea trout from the River Aura, where dioxin levels were nearly twice the maximum permissible level. Researchers believe that the fish are exposed to contamination during their migrations in the Baltic. The research suggests that sea trout should be classified in the same group as salmon and Baltic herring, for which EVIRA has issued special consumption recommendations.
