Drop in Illegal Discharges in Baltic

26 August 2009
The number of illegal discharges of oil by ships into the Baltic Sea observed by national surveillance planes and satellites has decreased by more than 10% in the past year according to HELCOM, the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission. The fall has been attributed to increased surveillance efforts on the part of the authorities and tighter rules. Dumping polluting waste into the sea will shortly become a criminal offence, with stricter penalties for ship source pollution also currently being put in place.
