Strategies adopted at EU level have succeeded in reducing the level of heavy metals detected in air and rain, claims a European study. The research, conducted partly under the EU-funded DROPS project, found that technological improvements and the closure of heavily polluting industrial plants in Eastern and Central Europe have resulted in cleaner emissions, thus protecting the human health and the environment. Researchers predicted a further reduction until 2010.
