EU Responds to UK Workers Strike

The European Commission has "strongly backed" UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s condemnation of strikes over the use of foreign workers, saying that the single market represents a “unique advantage to all EU Member States”. It added that while it understood UK workers' fears, discriminating against workers of other EU nations is “not the solution". The strikes reflect growing unease in the UK over the deepening recession. European Socialist Party President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen warned that workers could turn against the EU unless it shows it supports workers rights.
