Electric Cars in Europe's Capitals

26 March 2009
London and Paris are vying to become Europe’s ‘electric car capital’. Paris announced plans for an electric car-sharing scheme last October, which will see 2,000 electrical cars available in city centre underground car parks, 500 in parking bays and another 2,000 in the city’s suburbs. The cars could be booked online, picked up in one bay and left in another. London aims to follow the example set by Paris by also making electric cars available to rent. The disadvantages of such vehicles however are that they are produced in limited numbers and cost more than normal cars. The UK’s Climate Change Corporation, which recommends the use of “small diesel cars” that emit CO2 emissions below 100gm/km”, warns that electric cars could prove too expensive for London.
