Fewer English beaches were awarded blue flags for clean water, litter-free shores and high standards of safety this year than last year. One factor is that heavy rains and flooding brought more pollutants into the sea. More beaches however managed to achieve Quality Coast Awards (QCAs), which recognise good beach management. The Keep Britain Tidy campaign says that preserving England’s coastline is vital in order to preserve natural habitats and support tourism.
