Europe's Green Fruit Sector

27 November 2009
European fruit and vegetables are ‘greener’ than other food production sectors, a conference organised by the Swedish EU presidency has heard. According to research figures gathered in a 2002 study, fresh fruit production (3.40kg of CO2 per kg) and fresh green vegetable production (1.67kg of CO2 per kg) outperformed other sectors such as beef (19.30kg of CO2 per kg), pork (13.89kg of CO2 per kg), cheese (13.86kg of CO2 per kg) and coffee (113.62kg of CO2 per kg). The sector however acknowledged that improvements were still possible at all levels of the supply chain.
