Europe Facing Drought, Warns Agency

25 March 2009
Europe's water use is outstripping supply, warns a European Environment Agency report. As a result, many parts of the continent could soon experience serious drought and declining water quality. The report calls for a shift of focus away from trying to secure more supplies towards reducing demand in the first place. This could be achieved, argues the EEA, by putting a price on water so that all sectors pay for what they use, rather than simply paying a fixed price. Member States should also think about implementing drought management plans.
