Around Europe: Policy-Relevant European News Briefs

European Species under Threat

14 July 2009
Only one out of six endangered species is being properly protected by national governments, warns a new report. Hundreds of species, including the Iberian lynx and a number of frogs, are at risk of becoming extinct. Furthermore, there are only 80 giant cats left alive in the world, and a number of species of butterflies could disappear altogether. The disappearance of some species has been attributed to the growth of tourism and climate change. One suggestion has been to create more nature sanctuaries in Europe that would support rare wildlife.
