The vast majority of Europeans are not aware that carrying extra fat around the waistline poses a serious health risk. A survey of 12,000 consumers found that most consumers are unaware that a thickening waist can be a sign of a build-up of dangerous fats around the internal organs. The report, which was produced by a major pharmaceutical firm, points out that such fat build-up is strongly linked with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
