Fatigue on Ships Examined

03 July 2009
A management kit is being designed to tackle fatigue at sea, with the aim of improving health and safety conditions for those working on boats. The kit will be based on the results of a UK study on the impact of fatigue on watch keepers’ performance. The fatigue level of 60 deck and engineer officers will be measured on simulators that create the conditions of their watch keeping duties during 7 days. Fatigue during daily operations will also be measured onboard. The impact of fatigue on seafarers’ cognitive performance will be used as grounds for the toolkit, which will provide recommendations on improving onboard working patterns.
