Finnish Concern Over Pipeline

11 June 2009
Finland has demanded more details on the environmental impact of a Baltic Sea gas pipeline to be built between Russia and Germany. The country’s Environment Ministry says it wants to know how the pipeline would affect fishing, toxic chemicals and nature reserves in Finnish territory before it approves construction. There is also the issue of the pipe disturbing unexploded ammunition on the sea bed. Finland also wants Russia to make its own environmental assessment of the 1,200-kilometer Nord Stream pipeline public. The pipeline would carry 55 billion cubic metres of gas from Russia to Western Europe.
