Industry Backs Voluntary Measures

06 May 2009
The food industry has made ‘important progress’ in tackling obesity and other diet-related diseases, says the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU (CIAA). It claims that voluntary labelling based on Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs) has been a particularly effective initiative. The CIAA also congratulated industry on product reformulation efforts. Manufacturers of salt-containing foods including soups, sauces and cereals have reduced salt by up to 30%, it claims. The European food industry believes that self-regulation, rather than regulation, is the most effective means of achieving change. Consumer groups however have questioned the food industry’s ability to self-regulate.
