France Approves Stevia Sweetener

08 June 2009
The French Food Safety Authority (AFFSA) has approved the use of the 97% pure high-intensity stevia extract Rebaudioside-A as a sweetener in food and beverage products. The extract, from the stevia plant, is already used by major beverage firms in a number of products in other countries. The extract has been subject to numerous safety tests, and France is confident that the latest research confirms the safety of the product. The US Food and Drug Administration permitted the extract to be used in food and beverages in December 2008. Extracts of stevia, which are also widely used in Japan, can be up to 300 times sweeter than sugar. The French government, which is expected to adopt the authorisation later this year, hopes that other European countries will follow its lead.
