French Carbon Tax Set

The French Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, has announced that the price of France’s controversial carbon tax, likely to go into effect in 2010, will be set at €14 a tonne. This figure is below the recommendations of the Committee of Experts, presided over by the former Socialist Prime Minister Michel Rocard, but the measure is nonetheless proving unpopular according to local opinion polls. Prime Minister Fillon has assured voters that the government will compensate for personal losses through tax relief in other areas.
