French Nuclear Safety Concerns

10 July 2009
Regulators have expressed serious concerns about the safety of French reactor technology due to be rolled out in the UK. The Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII), which is conducting a detailed review of two reactor designs for the UK, says that the technology could be rejected if its concerns are not satisfactorily addressed. The NII is also concerned about the absence of safety display systems or manual controls that would allow the reactor to be shut down. The French-designed EPR is the world’s most powerful nuclear reactor, capable of generating 1,600 megawatts of electricity — enough to supply a city of nearly 2 million people.
