French to Tackle Algae Pollution

21 August 2009
French Prime Minister François Fillon has pledged State aid to areas affected by green algae pollution after an investigation concluded that a horse, which died on the beach of Saint-Michel-en-Grève, Brittany, was probably killed by hydrogen sulphide produced by decomposing algae. Green algae, which have seen rapid growth in recent years, largely due to the use of nitrates in agriculture, is beginning to be considered a serious environmental and health risk. Toxic hydrogen sulphide was found in quantities approaching 1,000ppm near Saint-Michel-en-Grève - nearly double the dose of 500ppm, the level at which experts warn hydrogen sulphide can be fatal.
