Galician mussel farmers are planning to vigorously oppose new proposals to carry out more restrictive controls and analyses of ‘red tide’ as part of the fight against marine biotoxins. The farmers are being supported by the Galician government in their opposition to the new European rules. According to a local government spokesperson, present controls and analyses of ‘red tide’ have demonstrated their effectiveness and reliability in ensuring the safety of mussels. The new restrictions, they say, would only serve to wreck the local mussel industry by rendering it unprofitable.
