German Scientists Want GM Rethink

German scientists have urged the government to change its policy on genetically modified (GM) food production. The German Research Foundation and the German Agricultural Society say that decisions driven by political rather than scientific considerations, such as the recent ban on the cultivation of the MON810 maize strain, could damage Germany’s ability to lead in this potentially important field of research. Both institutions stressed the responsibility of science in assessing the opportunities and risks of GM crops. European consumers remain sceptical when it comes to GM technology and GM food.
