Germans ‘Hoarding Light Bulbs’

01 September 2009
A market research firm in Germany has revealed that total sales of incandescent bulbs have jumped 35% in the previous six months, with some retailers reporting that sales of 100 watt bulbs have soared 600% since the end of July. A Europe-wide ban on light bulbs comes into force today, on 1 September. This proposal was put forward by the German Environment Minister during the German Presidency of the EU in 2007. This first instalment of the ban, which will be expanded each year until 2012 when all incandescent bulbs will be prohibited, will forbid the manufacture or sale of light bulbs above 75 watts.
