Germany: Energy Drink Banned

10 June 2009
An energy drink has been banned in at least six German states after traces of cocaine were found. The food safety agency in North Rhine-Westphalia (LIGA) state found 0.4 micrograms per litre in the beverage. Although the level does not pose a threat to public safety, it is likely that other German states will follow suit. The product contains a decocainised coca leaf extract in the product, which the manufacturer claims is used as flavouring in foodstuffs around the world, and is considered safe. Furthermore, the manufacturer claims that an assessment commissioned by the Austrian Belan Institute was unable to detect any trace of cocaine.
