Germany: New Generation of Biofuels

30 June 2009
A new generation of biofuels will be available in commercial quantities by 2010, says the German Ministry for the Environment. Biomass used for this second generation of biofuels will include a wide range of materials such as wood, straw, hay, vegetable waste and low grade crops. Unlike the first generation made from food crops, the second generation aims to prevent competition with food production. The commercialisation of new generation biofuels has been postponed in Germany to allow new technologies to develop. Germany is among the leading countries in building biofuel plants, and has introduced a 5.25 % compulsory level of biofuels to be blended with fossil fuels.
