Germany to Ban GM Maize Cultivation

Germany has decided to ban the cultivation of the genetically modified (GM) maize strain MON 810 on its territory. Monsanto’s MON 810 is the only GM strain currently allowed to be grown in the EU. German authorities claim that their decision is not political but an attempt to protect the safety of consumers and the environment. Monsanto on the other hand says that the product was approved for cultivation in the EU more than a decade ago and that it is safe. The European Commission recently tried to convince Member States to accept GM crops, but many remain sceptical.
