Giant Bird Breeds in UK

03 June 2009
The world’s heaviest flying bird, the Great Bustard, has bred successfully in the UK for the first time in 177 years. The species was driven to extinction in 1832 due to hunting. A charity called the Great Bustard Group however has been planning a reintroduction programme for years. Young birds from southern Russia, where their population is plentiful, were imported into the UK and last week, a female bird produced two chicks that were seen following their mother and being fed. Great Bustard birds can reach nearly 23 kilos in weight.
