Greece: Pollution Risk After Fires

The forests surrounding the Athens were the ‘lungs of the capital’, and the consequences of the fires will be a severe increase in air pollution for the city’s residents, say Greek environmentalists. According to the President of Athens’ National Observatory, the forests operated as a ‘filter of particulate matter that exists in the atmosphere’. The Greek government has pledged that the burnt out landscape will not be used for illegal building as many fear and that new forests will be planted.
