Greek Diet Evaluated

06 July 2009
Moderate consumption of alcohol, low consumption of meat and high consumption of vegetables and olive oil are the most beneficial components of the so-called Mediterranean diet, according to a Greek study. The eight and a half year survey, led by the University of Athens Medical School, suggests that the typical high consumption of fish and cereals and an avoidance of dairy products in the Mediterranean diet have less of a positive impact on health. Some scientists however have questioned the feasibility of identifying health benefits of certain components of a particular diet. The Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, fruits and vegetables, has been attributed to the comparative longevity of people in Greece and southern Italy.
